HLSW problems with latest steam update!

Postby GotGhosts? on Sat Oct 25, 2008 4:24 pm

It seems not many have had problems with the Steam update conflicting with the hlsw 1.3.0.3 update because the only place anyone has posted is on this forum, "Steam update...problem after", which doesn't apply to my problems. As of this morning no one has posted any problems on the Official Steam forum and since my server is running fine it can't be a Steam update problem.

I was able to register and login to the updated hlsw 1.3.0.3 yesterday but it's not showing my correct mod and I'm also not able to change the map but it shows the map change in the console. When I open Steam my server is showing the correct mods and everything is working correctly but the new HLSW version is not.

I spent hours last night uninstalling the new hlsw 1.3.0.3 and trying to get one of the older versions to work but kept getting this error, "HLSW ERROR: Connection failed (No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it. )". In between uninstalls and installs I ran CCleaner to make sure each uninstall was cleaned properly. None of the older versions will connect and the new updated hlsw 1.3.0.3 isn't working properly either.

I've been a server owner for over 7 years now and I've come to rely completely on HLSW to run my server when I'm not able to join.
Since I can't roll back the Steam update on my server and none of the older HLSW versions are working I hope someone has a fix for the new hlsw 1.3.0.3 update.

Thanks for your time,
GotGhosts?

From the german section it is stated that this error is a steam error. I don't know what it is or what it causes this.

Thank you for the quick reply.

I run a Team Fortress Classic server with the most recent update of both AdminMod and AdminOP. I've ran this server for the past 5 years and I know AdminOP can have it's issues if you don't know what your doing.
I have a bad feeling HLSW didn't include AdminOp because HL2 HL is what shows when I have the newest version of the HLSW update.

This afternoon when I have time I'm going to send a low priority support ticket to my servers host, UGS, to see if anyone else is having this problem. I haven't done this yet because if I remember right I'm the only one they rent a server to that runs AdminOP. UGS is one of the best game hosting companies I've rented from and they've always been very helpful.

My server is for younger kids and there is no player killing allowed so I'll send you the IP of my server in a private message.

Thanks for your time,

I am also having troubles with HLSW after the steam update. I am not having troubles getting the logs; This is probably because I use logmod. I also have no problems connecting to my servers. The only problems I have noticed is with the the mp_timelimit, the timeleft, the next map,the current map, and with it recognizing bots. 2 of my servers have the timeleft at 0:00 and the other two have the timeleft frozen at random numbers. 2 of them show the next map to be the same map that is playing (ones with timeleft at 0:00.) The other two show random maps. When i change the mp_timelimit cvar, the change is not reflected in hlsw. When the map changes, that change is also not relfected in hlsw. Bots (or actually fake clients that stay in spec in my case) are not being recognized anymore.

My server ip's are as follows (first 2 have timeleft frozen at 0:00) All HL1-CS servers

66.102.113.85:27016 Utopia Clan HookMod (FastMapDL) **Recruiting**
66.102.113.85:27015 Utopia KZ Climb *New Install* *Saved Top15 Climbers*
66.102.113.135:27015 Utopia Clan Deathrun
66.102.113.136:27015 Utopia Clan Gungame

Here is a picture showing the troubles with mp_timelimit and status commands shown in the console. The second picture shows the bots not being recognized
(Webserver is down too,, wtf is up with today.. have to use imageshack.)

notice, that 4 players have the exact same online time.

@ GotGhosts?:

The server u send me looks fine in my hlsw v1.3.0.3 as game: "HL - TFC" in the server list view and "HL - Team Fortress Classic" in the server details area.
maybe you should try reinstalling this latest version in a clean directory with all hlsw registry entries removed too.

@ all
problems with the current map, timelimit and related data display in hlsw with HL1 based games since the latest steam/hl engine update are known and caused by the update itself. this means, we cannot fix it, since its up to Valve.

I will try doing another clean reinstall and CCleaner does remove all uninstalled software's registry keys.
Hopefully Steam will come out with a fix because when I had the new HLSW 1.3.0.3 version installed I had almost the same exact problems as Snapple is having, but I run a TFC AdminOP server.

Steam needs to leave well enough alone or add a Steam just for certain online purchased games. They really need to stop cramming all those games into the same platform because it has to be over loaded.

HLSW support is far better in every way than Steam has ever been to it's customers and they don't even charge for their program. Steam gets their money and then they turn their backs on decent paying customers.

You've been very kind for taking your time to help us out SETIssl, I really appreciate that and I'm sure the others do also.

Thanks for all you do!

Sincerely,

I did as you suggested and I did a clean reinstall of the hlsw 1.3.0.3 setup. I can't even get it to open now because I'm getting this Application Error.

"hlsw.exe - Application Error The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0150002). Click on OK to terminate the application."

It's getting late here so no worries about it this evening. I'll see if I can take a look at it again tomorrow.

Again, I appreciate your help,

We have the same problem with our HL1 mod (DOD) servers. They don't update with the correct information for the same variables snapple stated in his post (curent map, nextmap, timeleft, bot players). I can easily believe its a Valve/Steam problem because the proper info doesn't always show up in Steam's Servers Window either.

No one has posted anything about HLSW not working properly since the Steam Update in the Official Steam forum so we are going to have to start one. If you'd like to start it Vet I would be more than happy to follow up with a reply stating the same problems as you.
It's hard to believe that we are the only ones that use HLSW to monitor our HL1 servers.

I'm not sure if this could be of any help but these are the changes that were made in the Steam Update I ran on my Dedicated Team Fortress Classic AdminOP server. Maybe someone can figure out what caused our HLSW problems and figure out a fix for it.

As for those of us having problems with HLSW I found this information interesting today.

10-23-2008
"[16:23:43] (@Xanimos): Valve spontaneously released a required update for HLDS tonight that we have rolled to all servers. This update reportedly just fixes some minor bugs, but it has also broken the game in several ways. For instance:
[16:23:43] (@Xanimos): - Servers can no longer "exec" commands in the autoexec.cfg file, as it causes a server crash. This one took us quite a long time to pin down, delaying the release of the update.
[16:23:44] (@Xanimos): - All servers appear to be unlocked when viewed externally, whenever they are empty.
[16:23:44] (@Xanimos): - Some servers do not respond to external queries at all, for an unknown reason, even though the server plays fine. We are still investigating this one.
[16:23:45] (@Xanimos): - Many clients report frequent (client-side) crashing and the mysterious svc_bad error is cropping up more often than usual.
[16:23:49] (@Xanimos): The external query protocol also changed, which forced us to rewrite that system; for this same reason, many utilities, such as HLSW, will need to be updated to show correct server information again.
[16:23:51] (@Xanimos): We expect for Valve to release a second version within the next day or two that addresses some (or hopefully all) of these bugs."

SETIssl If the information in bold is correct and the "external query protocol" was changed will HLSW update in order to fix the problems we are having, (curent map, nextmap, timeleft, bot players)?

@Vet, Lots of people are posting problems with DOD (HL1) servers, and many other games, so it might be worth your time to read some of the threads in the Steam Forum because a few have posted some fixes. I don't play DOD so I can't say if those fixes would help you out or not but it's worth a read in my opinion.

I hope some of you can get your games fixed until Valve gets things in order because it may be awhile, hopefully not. If anyone else finds good information please post a link and maybe others will be helped.

Re: HLSW (1.3.0.3) problems with latest steam update!

Postby GotGhosts? on Mon Oct 27, 2008 6:03 pm

I downloaded the Official Download hlsw_1_3_0_setup today and it installed perfectly and I am now able to do a map change through HLSW and it is showing the correct map time and map name.

I don't know if there were any changes made to hlsw_1_3_0_setup but I had recently downloaded the Beta hlsw_1_3_0_3_setup and that was the one that was causing my HLSW to not work.

I may have downloaded the Beta 2 days ago by accident so others that were having the same problems should check and make sure you have downloaded the Official HLSW, hlsw_1_3_0_setup.

Official Download hlsw_1_3_0_setup

Many thanks to all the developers of HLSW and I hope this will fix others who were having the same problems.

Sincerely,
GotGhosts?

*Edit I may have spoke too soon because I am not able to change the map and the map time is also not correct again. It was working properly when I first re-installed the Official Download hlsw_1_3_0_setup today so I don't know what's happening to cause this again.

Due to the recent steam update, I was forced to install the latest beta, 1.3.0.3. This thing is a resource hog. It also locks up on a regular basis. This never happened with any of the older versions I used. I was perfectly fine using version 1.1.5 until this update.

Why not offer a "lite" version for those of us not interested in all of the bells and whistles like buddy lists, etc?

The problems people are talking about with DOD in that forum have nothing to do with the problems that people are having with HLSW. From all the reading I have done, this is what I gather. The external protocol has changed, so programs that use that to get time left and other variables need to change what they are reading to make it right. If that is true, then it is HLSW and not steam that needs to update.

I am making an official post about the HLSW problems in the Counter-Strike section of the steam forum if you all want to add your insight there.
Found here http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/s ... p?t=741159

SETIssl, am I wrong in these assumptions?

yes, they changed the protocol of all hl1 games from goldsrc to hl2.
no, the bugs are still existing in Steam, like you can see in the steams own server browser!

and we already informed valve about all this problems, but if you want to post it again in the steam forums, maybe they will get it done faster ;>
